Building Standards - Coronavirus

We are taking steps to allow us to continue to deliver our services with as little disruption as possible. On this page you can find out about current arrangements for the following:

If you are a British Sign Language (BSL) user, you can have this information translated via contactSCOTLAND-BSL, the online British Sign Language interpreting service.

To help minimise risk to our staff and the public, we put the following measures in place:

  • We continue to carry out all work in association with the receipt, validation, processing, assessment and decision-making for Building Warrants
  • Our local Building Standards offices will be closed to the public but you will still be able to contact the teams by phone or email
  • Any meetings will be conducted by telephone or skype video call
  • Communication will be through telephone, skype video call, email or formal letter

eBuilding Standards portal and paper submissions

Due to the ongoing issues and the need for essential travel only, we are unable to accept paper applications/submissions. We are also unable to process cheque payments.

The national portals remain fully operational, our services are running as usual in terms of connecting to the portal on a regular basis. Please continue to make use of this method for submitting your new planning or building standards application and any additional documentation you are required to submit for any on-going application.

If you are a new, or existing, user to the portal, the Scottish Government support desk remains available, if required. Please note the temporary support arrangements noted on the eDevelopment website.

Where possible, please pay for your application via the portal when submitting your application. Alternatively, you can pay online using our online payment service or by telephone on 01467 534333. You will be advised when your application is awaiting payment.

If you have already submitted items in paper over the last few days, there will be a delay in processing them. Please contact 01467 534333 if you require any assistance or information.

Warrant process

We endeavour to provide a full warrant processing service during this period.

Building work inspections

The default position for all site inspections is to do them virtually using video or photographs. We can still carry out physical site inspections of empty buildings and outdoor inspections.

It is important that you notify us when each stage of construction is ready for inspection in accordance with the Construction Compliance Notification Plan for the development. It is also advisable that you keep alternative evidence like photos and certificates to help demonstrate compliance with each stage in the Construction Compliance Notification Plan.

For the time being, where possible Virtual Site Inspections should be used as an alternative physical site inspections. We have more details about Virtual Site Inspections available for reference.

Warrant expiries

If your Building Warrant is due to expire in the next few months, then it is important that you apply for an extension of the validity period of the warrant. If we extend the validity of your building warrant, it will be for a period of 9 months.

Dangerous buildings

We shall continue to provide 24/7 emergency cover for dangerous buildings as usual.
