Total communication involved using any means of communicating.  Children with speech and language difficulties or more complex needs may require support to initiate and participate in communication and interaction.  This means making use of all the means of communication that are available to the child.  This may include:

  • Speech and spoken language
  • Makaton signing
  • Photos
  • Picture symbols
  • Pictures
  • Objects
  • Voice output communication aids and computer based systems
  • On body signing
  • Natural gesture

Aberdeenshire Council, working in partnership with allied health professionals from NHS Grampian speech and language therapy team have created a policy for supporting total communication in schools.

Training in Makaton for parents is available via NHS Grampian Speech and Language Therapists.
