Royal Yachting Association Coaching Scheme

RYA Competent Crew recognises the appropriate skills needed to be an effective crew member on a sailing boat.

RYA Day skipper recognises an ability to skipper a small yacht by day in familiar waters, within 20 miles from a nominated departure point, and in favourable weather conditions.

RYA Coastal Skipper
Aberdeenshire Council recognises recognises the Coastal Skipper certificate as the minimum qualification required for a person to be responsible for a boat with inexperienced crew. Coastal Skippers are qualified for coastal passages by day or night that are no more than 20 miles from a safe haven.

RYA Yachtmaster Offshore
This qualification allows a person to skipper a cruising yacht on any passage up to 150 miles from a safe haven.

RYA Yachtmaster Ocean
Holders of this award can skipper a yacht on passages anywhere in the world.

RYA Yachtmaster Instructor
This certificate is held by experienced Yachtmasters who are trained and assessed to teach the RYA
cruising scheme.

RYA Yachtmaster Examiner
This is an appointment to train and assess RYA Yachtmaster Instructors, and other high end courses
