Equipment to help you be independent at home

The right equipment can help with daily living activities so you can continue to be safe at home. Equipment can promote independence, encourage normal movement and prevent further deterioration.

What we provide

Our Occupational Therapy Service has a range of specialist equipment that can be provided to help you, from small equipment to help with getting on and off the toilet, to larger equipment to help you get up and down stairs. We don't charge for this equipment.

We may identify what equipment is needed to support you after assessment. Equipment is only provided if it is the best way to help you. It is provided on loan for as long as you need.

What we don't provide

The Occupational Therapy Service doesn't provide:

  • mobility equipment, such as walking sticks, walking frames and wheelchairs
  • nursing equipment, such as commodes, urinals and incontinence pads

What you can buy

There are many everyday items widely available from retailers, which can make your life easier - such as electric can openers and large handled cutlery.

Living Made Easy provides free impartial advice and information on solutions, gadgets, devices and equipment for independent living.

Disability information Scotland has information, help and advice on aids, equipment and adaptations. You can search the directory to find local suppliers.

Financial support

Self-directed support (SDS) gives you options on how recommended equipment is provided. For example, you may request a direct payment so you can buy the equipment yourself. To receive the direct payment the equipment bought must be the right thing to help you achieve your assessed needs.
