Food and drink industry sector

Plate of food- Roast dinner

We recognise that food and drink, and its relationships to the traditional industries of farming and fishing, is vitally important to the growth of the Aberdeenshire economy.

Food and drink is a significant part of North East Scotland's economy, with more than 22,000 people directly employed in the sector:

  • 51% in agriculture
  • 32% in food manufacturing
  • 11% in fishing
  • 6% in drinks

This makes it critically important to the success of the Scottish food and drink sector.

Food and drink is a key sector in our Economic Development Strategy. The aim of this strategy is to attract and support businesses. It is done by generating sustainable economic growth, diversification and regeneration within our area and the wider region. View programmes we support:

North East Scotland Food and Drink Network

We work in partnership with Opportunity North East to support the growth of the region’s food and drink sector.

We organise networking and dining events. These events are important communication channels to impart topical or specialist information. They also help producers to identify customers and suppliers and to share the best business practice.

North East Scotland Food and Drink Awards

The North East Scotland Food and Drink awards are delivered in partnership with Opportunity North East. The annual awards celebrate innovation and excellence while rewarding success in the food and drink sector. Free to enter, they are open to food and drink producers based in the north east.

Food and Drink Business Growth Programme

The Food and Drink Business Growth programme is delivered by Opportunity North East, with the support of Aberdeenshire Council. The programme is uniquely designed to support owners and managers of food and drink companies in Aberdeenshire. With the aim of developing their business both nationally and internationally.

Taste of Grampian Food and Drink Festival

Aberdeenshire Council is also a supporter in the annual Taste of Grampian food and drink festival. This popular one day event allows visitors to discover and sample the wide range of quality food and drink produce from the North-east of Scotland.
