Ways to vote
You can vote in the following ways:
- At your polling station
- By postal vote
- By proxy vote (appoint someone to vote for you)
Please make sure you are registered to vote first.
At your polling station
A few days before polling day you will receive a poll card which will contain your own unique electoral register reference number and tell you where you should go to vote. Find out where your polling station is.
When voting in UK general elections you will need to show photo ID at your polling station. You won't need photo ID for Scottish Parliament elections or local council elections. Find out more about the voter ID requirement.

By postal vote
Anyone can apply for a postal vote. You can apply for a postal vote for:
- A specific election
- A set period of time
- All future elections (permanent postal vote)
Postal voters need to provide a signature and give their date of birth on the application form. This information is used as a security measure to prevent anyone else using your vote.
If you need help with your application, contact the Grampian Electoral Registration Office.

By proxy vote
If you’re unable to vote in person you can ask someone to vote on your behalf. This is called a proxy vote.
You can only apply for a proxy vote under certain circumstances, including:
- Being away on polling day
- Being registered as an overseas voter
- Having a medical issue or disability
- Not being able to vote in person because of work or military service
Anyone can act as your proxy as long as they are eligible to vote in the election and are willing to vote on your behalf.
