Occupational therapy service

Our Occupational Therapy service helps people manage their health and well-being. Our Occupational Therapists can help maintain or improve your ability to do the activities you need, or choose, to do so you can continue living actively and independently in your community. This service is part of a team of health, social care and third sector professionals.

If you feel you need help to make things easier at home call 03456 08 12 06 and ask for an Occupational Therapy assessment. Someone else can do this for you if you prefer.

We will take some details to help us with your request. We may ask about:

  • your health and if you have recently been in contact with your GP or another health professional
  • the daily activities that you can and can’t manage for yourself
  • your home and if you have any family or other support
  • the impact your difficulties have on you and the people supporting you

How quickly an Occupational Therapist can see you and the service we provide is based on our eligibility criteria. So it is very important we have as much information as possible about your circumstances.

Assessment

An Occupational Therapy assessment usually takes place in your home. But can be arranged at another location, if necessary.

An Occupational Therapist or Occupational Therapy Assistant will meet and discuss with you the activities you need and want to do. They will find out what:

  • you can do now
  • supports you to be independent
  • prevents you from doing any activities you can’t do now but need or want to do again

They will ask you to show them how you do these activities so they can understand what you can do and what you are finding difficult to do. They may ask you to try doing the activities again using different methods or equipment. They may also ask your permission to talk to other people who know you well, such as your family, carers or doctor.

They will work with you to find the best ways to help you continue to do the things that are most important to you. The recommendations will consider your condition and if it is likely to improve, remain the same or get worse. Equipment or an adaptation to your home might be recommended.

Rehabilitation and enablement

Many people can be helped to live independently without the need for equipment or adaptations to their home. Rehabilitation and enablement are time limited, intensive interventions to help you maintain and regain your independence. Our Occupational Therapy service aims to help you be independent with as little disruption to your normal daily life as possible.

Some examples of how we can work with you are:

  • teaching you new ways of doing everyday tasks
  • working with you to regain confidence in your abilities after time in hospital
  • educating you to help manage the impact of your medical condition on your daily life
  • identifying and managing fall risks to improve your safety
  • training in techniques to prevent damage, maintain range of movement and reduce strain on joints
  • managing posture to help movement and mobility
  • teaching your carers techniques to help you with daily activities
