Using technology to help you live independently

Technology Enabled Care and TEC facilities

The use of technology to provide health and social care services at home is Technology Enabled Care (TEC). TEC helps you to live safely and independently, and to manage your health more effectively.

We have two specialist facilities to show how TEC can make a difference, one in Peterhead and one in Stonehaven. These spaces offer practical demonstrations of how digital tools and aids can help people live safely and independently.

If daily tasks are becoming harder, our self- help guides have tips for buying equipment or making changes to your home. These guides are also available at both TEC facilities.

Peterhead TEC Room

The TEC Room is a technology demonstration room in Peterhead set up to show how this technology can help you. It is a welcoming, homely space to help you learn about some of the technology options available. There are live demonstrations, and you will find out how the technology can help you live safely and independently at home.

You can try out home consumer technology options such as:

  • smart speaker with built-in video screen (featuring Amazon Alexa)
  • automatic curtain opener
  • smart plugs connected to lamps
  • doorbell camera

You can also find out how the smart speaker can be used to set reminders and control various devices.

Some examples of the equipment available from our telecare service, such as fall sensors and pendant alarms, are also on display.

Stonehaven Independent Living Hub

The Independent Living Hub in Stonehaven has been set up to give you the opportunity to explore technology and equipment that can help you stay safe and independent at home. Our friendly staff are on hand to offer advice and demonstrate the equipment and technology available. All equipment is for demonstration use only.

You can try out a variety of small aids that can help with everyday activities at home, such as washing, dressing, kitchen and household tasks, and eating and drinking.

The aids include:

  • equipment to help with putting on clothes or washing lower body and lifting items from the floor
  • equipment to help with food preparation, pouring hot water or opening bottles or jars or windows
  • adaptive cutlery, plates, cups and beakers or accessories

There is also equipment available to help people with visual impairments, such as aids to help with pouring water, identifying items or help with reading.
