User guides for content editors

If you are an editor on the council website, you can make content changes and send them for publishing. We have a set of user guides to help you do that.

The guides include step-by-step instructions with screenshots. Some apply to all pages on the website, while others are specific to particular page templates.

Before you start

Before making any changes, it is important to understand some key basics. These will help you write clear, effective content and understand how our publishing process works.

All updates are made on the stage website first. For changes to be approved for publishing on the live website, they must meet our content and accessibility guidelines.

You can find out about:

Getting started with Umbraco

We use a content management system called Umbraco to update the website. If you are a content editor, you will have log in details to access Umbraco.

The getting started with Umbraco guide (PDF 191KB) explains:

  • The basics of Umbraco
  • How to log in and out

Updating the directory page template

The directory page template organises content as a list and lets us add filters, which appear as dropdown menus on the published page.

View our directory page template guide (PDF 1.91MB) to find out how to update pages using that template.

Rich text editor

All pages on the website include a rich text editor (RTE). This is the main area where you add or edit content such as headings, text and links. Depending on the page template, the RTE might appear in different sections of the page.

We have customised Umbraco's standard editor with our own styles so that pages match the council's brand and design.

View our rich text editor guide (PDF 415KB) for instructions on how to use it.

Documents and images

Most of the time you will make updates to text only.

Some pages will need media such as documents or images. If your content includes them, you will need to know how to add, update and remove media (PDF 747KB).

Requesting updates to go live

Once you have made your updates, to make them live, you will need to send them for approval and publishing.

View our guidance on how to request publishing (PDF 724KB).
